ADG WINS 2014 ROTCH TRAVELLING STUDIO AWARD

"FUTURE NORTH SVALBARD is a design studio that will visit the Norwegian Arctic Islands of Svalbard during the Fall of 2015. Three broad research questions will guide the design investigations: 1) How are Svalbard and the Scandinavian arctic affected by the dual forces of urbanization and climate change? What range of responses have they identified and/or implemented for managing these challenges? 2) What forms of urbanization have Svalbard and Scandinavian arctic undertaken? What forces have contributed to their urban fluctuations, and how are they similar and/or different from the urbanization models in other arctic countries? 3) How might design interventions in both urban and architectural scales be utilized to build economically, culturally and environmentally more resilient Svalbard?" ADG INTERVIEWED BY METROPOLIS MAGAZINE

“Just 400 people, mostly fishermen and their families, live on Sandhornøya. Dominated by craggy mountains, the island fastens to Norway’s Arctic coastline, a littoral zone pockmarked with fjords. Its remote location – Sandhornøya is an hour and a half from the next sizable town – and northerly latitude belie its relatively mild summers, varied landscape, and rich wildlife.” Metropolis Magazine

MATTHEW JULL AWARDED GRAHAM FOUNDATION GRANT

"The design of buildings and cities in the arctic is in large part a legacy of political and economic cycles competing against geographical and environmental inertia. One of the most influential and controversial of these projects is architect Ralph Erskine's proposal in the 1970's for a new ecological town in Resolute Bay, Canada. Although only part of Erskine's design was completed, what remains is a monument to his experiments on social and environmental design in northern climates. In Post-Occupancy Report, Erskine's surviving Resolute Bay project will be analyzed and documented in terms of construction and materiality, modifications and adaptations, and long term performance and impact on the town, in order to develop narratives for the future of northern architecture."
